Their missionary work is particularly notable because of where it took place. Iran is a country in which belief in the emergence of the Mahdi, the divinely appointed figure from the family of the Prophet Mohammed, has long occupied an important place in religious life. Yet for members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, publicly proclaiming that the Mahdi is here can carry serious risks.

AROPL members believe that Abdullah Hashem Aba Al-Sadiq is the true and legitimate successor of Mohammed and the divinely appointed Imam of this age. Members of the faith in Iran have faced severe persecution because of these beliefs.

Against this backdrop, the decision of believers to carry their message into their local community was more than an ordinary act of missionary work. Despite the potential consequences, they went into public spaces to share the good news that the Mahdi, Aba Al-Sadiq, has appeared.
