Newsweek and USCIRF Highlight Religious Persecution Against AROPL in Egypt

Yesterday, Newsweek, one of the most widely read global news outlets, published a major piece on the worsening religious freedom situation in Egypt, and it specifically mentions the persecution of members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light.

This comes on the heels of a recent statement by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) calling on the U.S. government to put Egypt on its Special Watch List for systematic violations of freedom of religion or belief, including the detention and coeercion of AROPL members to renounce their faith.

In addition, Amnesty International has documented the arrests, enforced disappearances, and pressure placed on Egyptian members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light.

Newsweek covering this issue shows just how much global attention the case has garnered. What began as a localized crisis of unjust detentions and religious coercion in Egypt is rapidly becoming a matter of international concern. From human rights investigations, to U.S. government monitoring, to major international medica coverage, the momentum is clearly building. So are the calls to end all persecution of AROPL members and all religious minorities, and to uphold the fundamental right to freedom of belief for everyone.
