Amnesty International has just launched a second Urgent Action calling for the release of detained members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Egypt. This renewed appeal follows alarming new evidence of torture and other ill-treatment in custody.
Despite the first Urgent Action earlier this year, Egyptian authorities continue to arbitrarily detain over a dozen Ahmadi believers solely for exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief. Family members report that between 10 March and 8 April 2025, National Security Agency (NSA) officers subjected detainees to torture and other ill-treatment in NSA facilities.
Omar Mahmoud Abdel Maguid was tortured with electric shocks to his genitals and beaten with a stick, causing spinal damage and difficulty moving.
Hazem Saied Abdel Moatamed was electroshocked on his genitals and beaten with an iron object, severing a tendon in his hand.
Hussein Mohammed Al-Tenawi’s health has seriously deteriorated in detention, and he remains in urgent need of medical treatment.
All detainees are facing accusations under Article 86 bis of the Penal Code solely in relation to their religious beliefs. Their lawyers were prevented from attending initial investigations, and detainees still cannot communicate or consult privately with lawyers of their choice.
Amnesty International is calling for:
The immediate and unconditional release of all detained Ahmadi members
Regular access to lawyers, adequate healthcare and family contact
Detention conditions that meet international human rights standards
Prompt, independent and impartial investigations into torture and enforced disappearance
An end to the prosecution of Ahmadi believers for peacefully practising their faith
This second Urgent Action sends a clear message: the world is watching, and we will not stay silent in the face of torture and religious persecution.
TAKE ACTION: WRITE AN APPEAL IN YOUR OWN WORDS TO THE EGYPTIAN PUBLIC PROSECUTOR OR USE THE AMNESTY UA MODEL LETTER, DEMANDING THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF THE DETAINEES, ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE AND LAWYERS, AND INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIONS INTO TORTURE.
